Summer crops are coming to an end and it’s time to start planning your winter crops and sowing. When I plan my garden, I primarily think about two 2 growing seasons – summer and winter. While some of these crops can be defined as autumn or spring crops, I generally only plant twice a year, with some exceptions such as my late crop of zucchini.
This year I used Microsoft Excel to plan my garden and it is very easy once you have built a template to go back and modify it for summer planting. I have also used Excel to list the beds, what I am planting and how many plants will be required and will start sowing those seeds in trays this week. Some things like carrots and parsnips I will directly sow into the ground.
At the moment I have only 4 garden beds empty and the arch way. By sowing in trays, I can continue growing my current crops in these beds for a while longer, which allows me to have some further produce.
So what is still growing at the moment:
- Pumpkins – Butternut and JAP
- Eggplants
- Late crop of Zucchini
- Tomatoes in the aquaponics
- Cucumbers
- Cucamelons
Some of the considerations when I started planning my beds for winter crops were what was in the ground, how it was performing, when it would come out/stop producing. Then I thought about what needed to be direct sowed and could be sowed in trays.
